Congratulations to our eighth graders who raised over $400 for charity at last week’s Holiday Boutique by selling products they designed in our makerspace. This project was part of their entrepreneur unit in language arts, and a wonderful example of the project based learning we offer our students.
In just five weeks they learned how to write business plans and use persuasive language to target their products at a specific market. All of the students learned basic 3D design software to create a variety of objects printed with our 3D printers. Some have also learned to use graphic arts software to create some wonderful acrylic ornaments cut on our laser cutter. The unit also exposed them to the financial challenges and realities of starting and running a business.
Our students decided to donate all revenue to the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County and the Wounded Warrior Project. They still have some inventory left over which will be on sale at the reception following our Winter Lights celebration next week.
Special thanks to our staff (Katherine, Mack, Brian, and Bryan) for teaming up to facilitate the unit, as well as Angela for putting on and managing the boutique.
