This past weekend, Upper School students in GSA’s chapter of the Junior State of America organization traveled to Woodland Hills to participate in the Southern California Winter Congress, a mock congressional simulation. Junior State of America (JSA) is a national student-run organization that encourages students to pursue leadership roles, embrace civic responsibility, and engage in civil discourse. Students vote on all leadership positions within the organization. The Southern California Junior State is made up of 2,000 area students.
Our Garden Street Academy chapter’s co-presidents, Max and Tom, organized the trip and were accompanied by active members Adara, Kaleb, Nicholas, Miles, Gabe, Ashley and Victoria. Adara and Max both hold regional positions in the Channel Islands Region as Director of Internal Affairs and Vice Mayor, respectively.
This trip was especially exciting since Max announced his candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of the Southern California State. Max will pursue his campaign in April at Southern California’s Spring State session. If elected, he will work as the second-in-command to the student-elected governor for the 2017-18 school year and preside over the Southern California Senate. On behalf of Garden Street Academy, we wish Max the best of luck in his campaign and congratulate him on his hard work!
