Last Friday, our botany and biology classes were visited by Kelton Temby, an entrepreneur, engineer, and the Director of the Santa Barbara Beekeepers Association. Kelton has merged his engineering background with a childhood passion for bees to create a new approach to monitoring the health of bee hives, called “EyesOnHives.”
He showed our students video and data that he collected through his cameras and software. Through Kelton’s novel approach, he has even made a new discovery about bee behavior. The students were able to try out some of the beekeeping equipment and located the queen very quickly!
After working with our upper school students, Kelton commented, “I was delighted to share our EyesOnHives bee camera and data science story with the students of Garden Street Academy! The engagement and questions from the students demonstrated their curiosity and awareness of the environmental importance of pollinators.”
